Our Company History
Our family-owned and operated business started back in 1958 with Leonard J. Vella, a recent high school graduate eager to work hard and do something worthwhile. After spending long nights sweeping parking lots and selling service contracts during the day, Leonard soon realized the value of helping local businesses keep their properties free from dirt and debris. Seizing on the opportunity to build a new type of industry, Leonard purchased a small sweeper truck and started a property cleaning company under the name San Jose Commercial Services. His goal? To provide quality service and build a reputation on his integrity, reliability, and hard work.
As the Bay Area grew over the years, the company did, too, expanding to cities and regions beyond San Jose. In 1984, we changed the company name to Universal Sweeping Services, Inc. to better represent our expanding geographical scope. Over the next 25 years, we expanded our line of services as well, adding a team of experienced landscapers, pressure washers, and work crews to every territory we serviced. Then, in 2011, we gave the company its current name — Universal Site Services, Inc. — to reflect our work as a comprehensive exterior maintenance company.
After retiring in 2005, Leonard — also known as the Grandfather of the Sweeping Industry — relinquished control of the company to his son and daughter, Joe and Gina Vella. Joe, who has worked at the company since the age of 16, brought with him insider exterior maintenance knowledge and years of first-hand experience to his new role. While Gina, who graduated from FIDM with a degree in fashion merchandising and design, brought her management and leadership skills from companies like Calvin Klein and Guess Jeans. The sibling duo vowed to lead the company with the same values their father committed himself to: loyalty, dedication, tenacity, teamwork, true grit, and the utmost respect for the “feet on the street” that make the business successful.
Under new leadership, we’ve continued to grow and build upon our foundation of stellar communication, quality service, and unwavering dedication to our clients. We’re proud to be recognized as the 14th largest woman-owned business in the Silicon Valley, and to employ steadfast, industrious men and women across three states, all of whom exhibit a true grit factor.
