The first microchip, which garnered the early stages of the personal computer, was in the initial stages of development in 1958. In that same year, Leonard J. Vella saw the need for local businesses to keep their properties free of dirt and debris. Leonard understood the value of a well maintained property, so he set out to build a company that would provide property cleaning services for local businesses in San Jose, California.In 1958, Leonard purchased a small sweeper truck and started his company under the name of San Jose Commercial Sweeping Services. Leonard committed his energies to the principles of loyalty, reliability, and a solid work ethic which entrusted him with a devoted customer foundation.

The Transformation of Universal Site Services
As the Bay Area grew over the years, Leonard seized the opportunity for his business to expand with the growth. On May 14, 1984, the Articles of Incorporation were amended to to Universal Sweeping Services. Although the company changed its name, the unshakable principles that Leonard founded from the onset of the company remained intact. During the rapid development of industry in the Bay Area, Leonard continued to apply his solid fundamentals of loyalty, reliability, and a solid work ethic.
Under the leadership of Leonard USS continued to develop and expand its line of services provided to include; street sweeping, parking lot sweeping, pressure washing and propery maintenance. On July 1st, 2011 the company found itself in a situation where its name no longer represented the full scope of services the company provides. The Articles of Incorporation were amended to represent the name change of the company to Universal Site Services, Inc. Today, USS is an accomplished and competent company servicing not only the Bay Area but all of California, Arizona and Nevada.
USS’ extensive experience with street level crews is second to none. The Grandfather of the Sweeping Industry
Leonard, known as the “Grandfather” of the sweeping industry, retired recently and relinquished the control of the company to his son and daughter — Gina Vella and Joe Vella. Although Leonard has welcomed his much deserved retirement, he continues to provide valuable insights to the leadership of Universal Site Services.
